Automotive Heritage Trophies

Alex Buchan from Troy, Michigan is a renowned automobile fine art sculptor and part of the automotive heritage community. After a 40-year career with GM design Alex has, for many years now, been creating bronze sculptures of historic automobiles, drivers, owners, historic people and contextual scenes. His work is known internationally, and we’re proud to have him creating our trophies.

Alex says, “In my private life as an artist, I have created sculptures in wood and bronze using techniques greatly influenced by the methods I learned while at General Motors. Now I am trying to design and create new sculptures with emotion, excitement and speed. Each new piece must tell a story. My goal is to tell the history of the automobile in bronze with all the excitement which was experienced in the early years of racing.” For the Automotive Heritage Journalism Awards, Mr. Buchan created trophies for the best entry in each category from a sculpture of the historic Buick Bug race car. The trophy for Lifetime Achievement is a bust of Louis Chevrolet in two sizes, one for the recipient and a larger one, engraved with the names of previous honorees, for permanent display at the LeMay-America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington. Mr. Buchan notes that famous racer Chevrolet drove the Buick Bug in competition during the early days of motor racing. Two other Buchan sculptures will be awarded to the winners of the Future Collectible Vehicle of the Year and Concept Vehicle of the Year.
